CHARLES 1ST MALTRAVERS FARTHING TYPE 3B MM BELL

This is a nice English Civil War period Charles Ist (1625-49), copper Maltravers Farthing, "Peck" type 3b (1634-36), designed by Nicholas Briot, crown over crossed sceptres within beaded circle, Latin legend and outer beaded border surrounding both sides, initial mark bell both sides, CAROLVS: D: G: MAG: BRIT and on the reverse a crowned bird faced harp with six strings, .FRAN. ET. HIB. REX. (Peck 234; S.3198).

The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Charles by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain" continuing on the reverse "France and Ireland."

Henry Frederick Howard, the Lord Maltravers is the name associated with this issue of Farthings in a joint patent with Sir Francis Crane who had held the previous patent with the Duchess of Richmond. The patent continued to be worth 100 marks a year (£66/13/4d), they called upon Nicholas Briot for a new design in the hope of eliminating the counterfeits.
